Cumbernauld Well or no well?
It has been suggested by local historians that
this circular stone in Cumbernauld Glen was in
fact a well used for the gamekeeper of
Cumbernauld Glen, situated next to the Dovecote.

We were not convinced & called
upon 'BBC Past lives' radio team that specialise with
historical puzzles and asked them to come and

figure out its function. It was in fact not a well,
as the bottom only went 8 inches deep and it was
acknowledged by archaeologist David Connolly as a
knocking stane.
what is a knocking stane, well (no pun intended here)
It has been used from the early beginnings of time right
up until very recently as a way to dehusk Barley or to
crush grain for human and animal consumption,
a little like a modern day pestle & mortar.

Head on over to this link to see more pics with the
BBC team and ourselves in Cumbernauld glen
